Most of the coffee advice online starts at the espresso machine. I went the other way. The grinder came first, in December 2024, and it is the one piece I run every week. Everything else on this page is the order I would add gear in, not a pile of things to buy at once.
Step one: the grinder, which I own
The Cuisinart burr grinder is the base of the whole ladder. A blade grinder gives you dust and boulders in the same scoop; a burr grinder gives you one size, and one size is what makes the rest of the steps repeatable. I 3D printed a hopper extender for mine so it holds a full bag. It will not grind fine enough for espresso, and I say so on its card.
Step two: a better cup for the same beans
An AeroPress is the next thing on my coffee shortlist. It makes one clean cup in about two minutes, cleanup is a puck into the trash, and it travels. The scale with a timer is the boring purchase that fixes the real problem: two mornings that taste different because I eyeballed the water. The gooseneck kettle rounds out the pour-over side of the ladder.
Step three: espresso, when it is time
The Barista Express is the top rung on my shortlist because it solves the gap my grinder leaves: it has its own burr grinder tuned for espresso, so I am not buying a second grinder and a machine. I have not owned one. It goes on the list as the step I would take if I found myself missing espresso most mornings, and not before.
Skip the ladder entirely if you are happy with a pod machine. The Keurig on the coffee page exists for exactly that: no grinder, no scale, one button.
